 What is Kanban?

Kanban is an aspect of lean that focuses on visualizing the workflow, limiting work in progress (WIP) and focusing on optimizing throughput.  It was originally developed by Taiichi Ohno at Toyota.  Kanban is less prescriptive than Scrum and many other agile frameworks and works very well when needs and priorities can shift often.  In fact, many teams often combine elements of Kanban with whatever other methodology they are using.

Advantages

-Lightweight, can apply to any process

-Works well when things change often

-Highlights bottlenecks impediments

-Focuses on flow and getting work done

Disadvantages

-Kanban is generic/not prescriptive, starting out in manufacturing, so it does not address many other aspects involved in software development and delivering projects
